INCITE A Single Moms Support Group
We are a non-profit organization that supports a prominent part of our community, that is growing and in need. Look around you; single moms are everywhere...your neighbor, your sister, your daughter, your co-worker, your friend, your mother, your grandmother, etc. Single moms are a huge demographic! Did you know, 1 in 6 Halton families are single parent families, 93% of which are households run by a single mom. Most of these families are struggling financially and often these women are challenged with anxiety, stress and self-esteem issues. Many of these women are parenting alone and often are faced with other adversities such as serious health concerns, children with special needs, surviving abuse, stress from their ex-partners, etc.
We are a grass-roots organization, founded by myself, Beth Hudson, a single mom who has an intense desire to support these "families-in-need." Unfortunately, at times, there are gaps in the system and a lack of understanding and support. Single moms often deal with tremendous amounts of stress, have a full work load, have serious financial struggles and are overloaded balancing work, parenting and personal challenges alone, with little to no support, understanding, guidance, acceptance or compassion. Often these women do not have any support system at all.
We are warriors!
Though, there are some supports in our community for single parents, they can be spread out, hard to navigate, not always affordable or accessible and often there are policies and procedures that create barriers to getting the help that these single moms so desperately need. Many local families are slipping through the cracks, are being neglected and have nowhere to turn. Many single moms feel alone, are struggling and need an extra helping hand. These women need support, encouragement, guidance, direction and solutions!
We have been there.
This is what prompted me to create programs and services designed specifically to support single moms and their families in our community. A one-stop-shop: Programs that are easy to get to, affordable and accessible; Programs that do make a difference; Programs that are needed. No one is turned away. No one is dropped. Everyone is encouraged. We are simply single moms supporting other single moms.
There is a need.
At this point, we are a volunteer based organization and are located in our community, downtown Burlington, ON. We are in the process of obtaining our non-profit and charitable status. Once we receive our status we will apply for funding. In the meantime, we rely solely on the generosity of our community; including donations and "in-kind" services. We have already been approached by several other organizations in different cities asking us to run our programs out of their locations; stating that there is a real need for this type of program in their community. We will look to expand in the near future, but for now we are concentrating on our community.
"We love to hear feedback from other organizations about what they are hearing from our members. It is thrilling to hear that our Moms are talking about us; to their therapists, social workers, case workers, friends and clients, saying that we have made a difference in their lives. They say that since joining INCITE they feel like they are on a positive path and are moving forward in a good direction; that our programs have not only helped them, but have helped their children as well. Our Moms truly are our best advocates!"

"Our mission is to raise single moms and their children in our community by providing support, encouragement, guidance, direction and opportunities for empowerment."
"There are many single moms who feel alone, are struggling and need an extra helping hand; they are not getting the help that they need."
"A lot of people are slipping through the cracks, are being neglected and let down. They have no where to turn."
"Many single moms feel like there is a stigma attached to being a single parent. I hear words like "failure" and "not good enough". I hear the words "guilt" and "shame". They are feeling different in the workplace; often considered "unreliable" or "not capable". They feel "unlovable" and "unwanted". They feel lost."
"Single moms are warriors! They are modern day heroes. Here they are doing two-jobs-in-one, raising fantastic kids, balancing life, work and parenting and doing it all alone. They are volunteering in their community, getting involved in their schools, maintaining their homes, carpooling to soccer, loving their children, caring about their neighbors, working hard in their careers...they should be commended, supported and raised up."
